About the Work

In the photograph A PLACE BETWEEN Okita uses a collection of materials and traditions to tell a story of intersections that connect his story to both Japan and Canada. Materials such as coastal sand from both Japan and British Columbia, ashes of native Sage from Alberta, rice from a re-discovered family field in Hiroshima, and seeds and soil from agricultural lands in Japan and Canada, are used to tell a physical narrative. Drawing from his own experiences and impressions, Okita creates a language to consider how information and histories get interrupted and lost, rediscovered and reframed.

about the show

A selection of work by Japanese Canadian artist Randall Okita that addresses separation and connection, and the journey from one to the other. Pushing the conventions of performance, sculpture, filmmaking and digital media, Okita’s work is recognized for its innovation and intricacy, and its balance between rich aesthetics and difficult subject matter. Meditations on violence, conflict and reconciliation are present throughout Okita's work, with recent years showing Okita's consideration of these themes in personal histories.
